Men for Harris is the Antidote to MAGA Culture

Men are at a pivotal tipping point. Our generations old dominance-based Man Box culture of masculinity, which has long taught us that we must display dominance over others in order to be “real men,” has resulted in political, social, and environmental disaster.

But for decades, men have also been coming to understand the terrible price we pay for living trapped in Man Box culture’s rigid rules for being a man. Rules that tell us to hide our emotions, always be tough, be breadwinners not care givers, and to have control over women and girls.

When boys and men hide our authentic selves to fit into the rules of Man Box culture, we give up authentic human connection in exchange for promises of power over others. The result? Deep social disconnection and isolation trapped a bullying hierarchy in which the pressure to dominate those around us never, ever ends.

The result has been epidemic levels of social isolation. Cigna reports that over 50% of Americans feel “sometimes or always alone.” These levels of loneliness have the health impact of smoking a pack of cigarettes a day. If it’s doing that to our bodies, what’s its doing to our mental health?

The Man Box culture on display at Trump’s RNC is deeply toxic to men and to all whose lives we impact. It is a death cult, designed to move power to those at the top while condemning our sons to lives of deep disconnection, anxiety, violence, loneliness and early mortality.

Which brings me back to Kamala’s theme. “We choose freedom.” Men for Harris is a call for men to do exactly that. To break out of generations of patriarchal Man Box bullying and create a healthy masculine culture of expression and connection. To fight for everyone’s freedoms.

Kamala Harris is our candidate. And if I may, I want to say the following. Harris is my candidate because she is immensely competent, agile, strong, tough, joyful, prepared, deserving and experienced. She is ready to lead this country.

When men support Kamala Harris based on her qualifications and experience, we do something very powerful in our own lives. We say, to hell with Man Box culture. I do not want to or need to signal power over women or non binary folks in order to be a man. I’m free of all that.

We’re doing the Men for Harris call tonight. I don’t know if five men or five thousand men will show up but I’m excited to hold space because we’re building a diverse community of men fighting for a better America. We’re fighting for opportunity, freedom and justice for all.
